Train accidents are a common feature in the Indian Railways. Study of train accident records suggests that a large number of accidents happen because of derailments and at railway crossings. Till recent time-slot of crossings were open and a majority of accidents occurred due to the human negligence (Railway staff).
Railway safety is given prominence in Railway Budget every year but with no results. With the help of new technology, the speed of the train is getting a boost but it requires robust safety measures also to avoid train mishaps and to make Rail journey safe.
As per the data by the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), around 27,581 people died during the year 2014 in Railway related accidents. According to the analysis by NCRB, the leading causes of railway accidents were - fall from trains, collisions of trains and collision with people on tracks.
Train derailment due to fishplate removal by miscreants was also getting one of the serious causes of train accidents in India. The Indian Railway ministry is trying its best to get strong safety measures available internationally to make railway journey safe.
As the government is pro-actively revamping the railways, train accidents remain a big challenge for the entire Railway Ministry. In the year 2016, nearly 150 people were killed in Indore-Patna Express derailment alone. The accident was one was the biggest railway accidents in the world in 2020. The year 2020 had only seven collisions and derailments in which 65 people were killed.
