9:30 to 12:00 is 2:30  

12:00 to 6:00 is 6:00  

6:00 + 2:30 = 8:30  

OR

6:00pm is 18:00 on the 24 hour clock.  

To 18-9.5 ( for the 9:30 start)= 8.5 hours  

Less 0.5 for the half hour lunch=> 8 hours work.
