I am in little bit doubt in Ouestion A. But don't worry I will show you Question B.

B. 1) Surprise or frighten (someone) suddenly and usually not seriously. To move or jump suddenly because something surprises you or frightens you. See the full definition for startle in the English Language Learners Dictionary.

2)To move or make something move quickly and lightly, especially through the air.

3)A large, deep hole in the side of a hill or under the ground, a big cave.

4) To worry, or to think a lot about something that makes you worried or sad.

Sorry dude but I can't understand the passage. I hope Question B will help you more than Question A.
