Answer:

say 1/4 of a number to be = 1/4x

and 1/5 to be 1/5x

what we have is 1/4x-1/5x=3

on equating denominators we will get (5x-4x)/20=3

x=60

1/4 of 60 = 15

1/5of 60 = 12

hence 1/4 of a number that is 60 exceeds other by 3

Answer:

the number would be -11

Step-by-Step Explanation:

let, the number be 'x'

So, it's succeeder would be 'x+1'

1 1

--- x + 3 = --- (x+1)

4 5

  • transposing denominators of both fractions to the opposite side, we get

5(x+3) = 4(x+1)

5x + 15 = 4x + 4

  • transposing like terms, we get

5x - 4x = 4 - 15

x = -11

Therefore, the required number is -11
