1) lord Dalhousie came to India as the governor-general in 1848. He was from the beginning determined to extend direct British rule over as large area has possible. The underlying motive of Dalhousie policy was the expansion of British exports to India.

3) An indian ruler entering into a subsidiary alliance with the British would accept British forces within his territory and to pay for their maintenance. The ruler would accept the British official (resident) in his state.
