MS Slater is a greedy or selfish woman who doesn't care about death in her house only cares about her looks and her clothes.she want to outshine the jordans so she bought new dress for her family the dresses which are weard at the time of death of someone.so they want to be dressed before the arrival of Jordans.i think the dress was known as mouring dress.
