(a) Magnesium atom has a configuration of 1s² 2s² 2p⁶3s² . It has 2 valence electrons 3s , to acquire stable electronic configuration it needs to gain 6 electrons (or) loose 2 electrons. But Magnesium tries to lose electrons and forms two units of positive charge on it. Chlorine has a configuration of 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁵. To acquire stable electronic configuration chlorine needs to gain 1 electron (so that it gets octet ). Now , The two electrons which were lost by one Magnesium atom is now gained by two chlorine atoms. Here in bonding one magnesium atom and two chlorine atoms are involved. The chemical formula of Magnesium chloride is MgCl₂.
(b) Ions present in Magnesium chloride (MgCl₂) are Mg²⁺ and 2Cl⁻.
(c) Ionic compounds do not conduct electricity in solid state because there is no free movement of ions due to the titely packing of oppositely charged ions. But Ionic compounds conduct electricity in molten state.
Answer:
(a) When Magnesium hydroxide reacts with hydrochloric acid then Magnesium chloride is formed with water
The reaction is as follows:
Mg(OH)2 + 2HCl = MgCl2 + 2H2O
(s) (aq) (aq) (l)
(b) The ions present in Magnesium chloride are Mg²+
And Cl-
(c) Ionic compounds does not conduct electricity in the solid state because when ions are not mobile (free to move) in the solid state.
