If chlorine is passed for a considerable time over solid (slaked lime), the product formed is bleaching powder. Bleaching powder is represented as CaOCI₂. It has greater available chlorine than sodium hypochloride NaClo (liquid bleach). If contains about 36% of available chlorine. Bleaching powder deteriorates, if left in contact with the air and smells of chlorine because of action of CO₂ in atmosphere. It is widely used as a bleaching agent for bleaching clothes. It is used for disinfection of drinking water or swimming pool water. For use in outdoor swimming pool, CaOCI₂ can be used as a sanitizer in combination, with cyanuric acid stabilizer. Two stabilizer will reduce the loss of chloride because of VV. How is bleaching powder prepared?
