distance \: d = 240 \\ \\total \: time \: taken \: \: t = 4 \frac{1}{4} = \frac{17}{4}\: h\\ \\ <br />let \: x \:part \:of \:distance \:is \:covered \: by \: him \:at \:the \:rate \:of \: 60 \:km \:per \: h \\ \\therefore \:time\:taken \:in \:this \:situation \: \\ \\= \frac{x}{60} h \\ \\

240-x part of distance is covered in 45km/h

time taken
 = \frac{240 - x}{45} h
therefore

 \frac{17}{4} = \frac{x}{60} + \frac{240 - x}{45} \\ \\ \\ \frac{17}{4} = \frac{3x + 96 0 - 4x}{180 } \\ \\ \frac{17 \times 180}{4} = 960 - x \\ \\ 765 - 960 = - x \\ \\ - 195 = - x \\ \\ x = 195km
