= speed of light in 1 medium / speed of light in 2 medium

so refractive index of water with respect to air is given 1.33

let us 1 st find the speed of light in water.

speed of light in air = 3 × 10⁸ m/s

so 1.33 = 3×10⁸/ v. ( where v is the speed of light in water)

v= 3× 10⁸/1.33= 2.25 × 10⁸ m/s

now refractive index of diamond with respect to water= speed of light in water / speed of light in diamond.

= 2.25×10⁸/1.25×10⁸= 2.25/1.25= 1.8

so the approximate value of refractive index of diamond with respect to water is 1.8
