The Bibi Ka Maqbara is a tomb located in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. The mausoleum was commissioned by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in 1660 in the memory of his chief and favourite wife, Dilras Banu Begum. She has died a month after giving birth to their fifth child. She was posthumously titled as Rabia-ud-Daurani.
The monument is considered as a symbol of Aurangzeb's 'conjugal fidelity’. The Mausoleum bears a striking resemblance to the Taj Mahal which is an iconic mausoleum of Aurangzeb's mother, Mumtaz Mahal. She has died in childbirth as well.
Unlike his father, Shah Jahan, Aurangzeb was not much interested in the architecture. Because of its strong resemblance with the Taj, it is also often termed as the Dakkhani Taj (or the Taj of the Deccan).
The mausoleum was designed by the architect, Ata-ullah who was the son of the principal designer of the Taj, Ustad Ahmad Lahauri.
Aurangzeb's son, Azam Shah, later took charge of overseeing the construction and repairs of the structure.
