Dams are built to provide water for human consumption, for irrigating arid and semiarid lands, or for use in industrial processes. Many dams are built for more than one purpose; for example, water in a single reservoir can be used for fishing, to generate hydroelectric power, and to support an irrigation system.

A Dam is a place where water is stored at a height in large volumes. They are called multipurpose projects because the water stored in them solves many purposes: Provide water to the agricultural fields by canals for irrigation.

Dams are opposed due to various reasons: 1) It requires huge acres of land to construct it. 2) Low lying land areas will be submerged under the dam and the vegetation rots leading to spread of diseases. 3) During the rainy season the water may overflow and damage the crops in the surrounding areas.

Dirty water containing chemicals is put back in the river. Water used for cooling is warmer than the river itself, and this is also a form of pollution. People are sometimes careless and throw rubbish such as bottles and crisp packets directly into rivers. ... Polluted water also carries diseases.

Jawaharlal Nehru proudly proclaimed the dams as the 'temples of modern India' as it was felt that, the construction of large dams would solve many problems of India. It would result in the generation of electricity, would provide water for irrigation to the farmers, supply water to household and industries
