⇒$( x-\frac{1}{x} )^{2} = (3)^{2}$

⇒$x^{2} + \frac{1}{x} ^{2} - (2*x*\frac{1}{x} ) = 9$

⇒$x^{2} +\frac{1}{x^{2} } -2 = 9$

⇒$x^{2} +\frac{1}{x^{2} } = 9-2$

⇒$x^{2} +\frac{1}{x^{2} }$ = 7
