QUESTION:

A RECTANGULAR BLOCK OF METAL HAS WEIGHT 6.0N AND MEASURES 3.0 cm × 4.0 cm × 5.0 cm. WHAT IS THE SMALLEST PRESSURE THAT IT CAN EXERT WHILE RESTING ON A HORIZONTAL SURFACE?

ANSWER:

P_2 will have the lowest pressure of 3000 Pa

GIVEN:

l = 3.0 cm

b = 4.0 cm

h = 5.0 cm

F = 6 N

TO FIND:

Smallest pressure.

FORMULAE:

PRESSURE = FORCE/AREA

COVERSIONS USED:

1 cm² = 0.0001m²

EXPLANATION:

GIVEN METAL IS A CUBOID. HENCE IT HAS THREE AREAS.

l × b = 3 × 4 = 12 cm² = 0.0012 m²

b × h = 4 × 5 = 20 cm² = 0.002 m²

l × h = 5 × 3 = 15 cm = 0.0015 m²

Let

______________________________________________

A_1 be 0.0012 m²

A_2 be 0.002 m²

A_3 be 0.0015 m²

______________________________________________

P_1 = 6/0.0012

P_1 = 60000/12

P_1 = 10000/2

P_1 = 5000 N/m²

______________________________________________

P_2 = 6/0.002

P_2 = 6000/2

P_2 = 3000 N/m²

______________________________________________

P_3 = 6/0.0015

P_3 = 60000/15

P_3 = 4000 N/m²

_____________________________________________

P_2 will have the lowest pressure of 3000 Pa

______________________________________________

EXTRA POINTS:

  • We can also do this without calculation as Pressure inversly proportional to area the highest area will have the lowest pressure.
  • Other unit of Pressure is pascal(Pa) which was given after by the name of a scientist called pascal.
  • 1 N / m² = 1 Pa
