Given:

  • Three ribbons of length 4 m, 8 m & 10 m

To do:

  • Cut them into maximum length parts such that all parts are equal.

Concept used:

  • HCF of a number is the highest factor that can divide given numbers in maximum and equal parts.
  • To find HCF of 3 numbers

Solution:

To divide them into maximum length of equal parts, greatest common divisor or HCF is necessary.

So, HCF of 4, 8 and 10.

Clearly HCF of 4, 8 and 10 is 2.

Hence, 2 m is the longest ribbon that can be cut off without a remainder.

Now,

Ribbons obtained from first ribbon = 4÷2 = 2

Ribbons obtained from second ribbon = 8÷2 = 4

Ribbons obtained from third ribbon = 10÷2 = 5

So, Total number of ribbons = 2+4+5 = 11 Ribbons

Hence, 2 m and 11 ribbons is the answer.
