Question :-

A 8000 kg engine pulls a train of  5 wagons , each of 2000 kg along a horizontal track. If the engine exerts a force of 40000 N and the track offers a friction force of 5000 N, then calculate :

(a) the net accelerating force;

(b) the acceleration of the train , and

(c) the force of wagon 1 on wagon 2.

Answer :-

(a) Net accelerating force

Force exerted by the wagon = 40,000 N

Frictional force = 5,000 N

∴ Net accelerating force = 40,000 N - 5,000 N

                                         = 35,000 N

The net accelerating force is 35,000 N

(b) Force = mass × acceleration

==> acceleration = force / mass

Given :

force exerted = 35,000 N

mass of the train

mass of engine = 8,000 kg

mass of a wagon = 2,000 kg

mass of 5 wagons = 2,000 × 5 kg

                               = 10,000 kg

mass of the whole train = 10,000 kg + 8,000 kg

                                       = 18,000 kg

acceleration

So acceleration = force / mass

                          = 35,000 N / 18,000 kg

                          = 35 / 18 m/s²

                          = 1.9444.... m/s²

The acceleration was 1.94 m / s²

(c) Force of wagon 1 on wagon 2

Consider only 4 wagons here because 4 are exerting pressure on the first....

Accelerating force = mass × acceleration

mass = 2,000 kg × 4 = 8,000 kg

                     force     = 8,000 kg  × 1.94 m/s²

                                   = 155200 N

The force will be 1,55,200 N

Hope it helps !
