From the question,

(BM/ AB)² = 1/2  { ratio of the areas of similar triangles is equal to the square of the ratio of the corresponding sides}

√2BM = AB

√2BM = AM + BM

(√2 - 1 ) BM = AM

AM / BM = (√2- 1)
