Please help me understand, What are aqueous solutions? If they are water based then why is ZnCl2 an aqueous solution when it is not water based? (please give a detailed ans )

aqueous solutions at solutions that have the solvent as water

these are mostly shown in chemical equations ZnCl2is an aqueous solution because it is hygroscopic

to be hygroscopic is to asbsorb water from the atmosphere and form a solution so that is why it is aqueous

so when ur absorbs water from the atmosphere it forms an aqueous solution
