Answer:

a) Probability = 0.2

Assumptions include:

  • All rows are the same as the one shown;
  • Every seat is equally likely to be assigned to Pam.

b) Probability = 0.4

Step-by-step explanation:

a) There are 10 seats across.  Two of these are window seats.

Assumption:  All rows are the same as this one!

Then:

total # of seats = 10 × ( # rows )

# window seats = 2 × ( # rows )

So...

P( getting a window seat )

= ( # window seats ) / ( total # of seats )               ... (*)

= ( 2 × rows ) / ( 10 × rows )

= 2 / 10

= 0.2

Another assumption used at line (*) is that every seat is equally likely to be assigned to Pam.

b) The number of aisle seats in the row shown is 4.  So..

# aisle seats = 4 × rows

Therefore

P( getting an aisle seat )

= ( # aisle seats ) / ( total # of seats )

= ( 4 × rows ) / ( 10 × rows )

= 4 / 10

= 0.4
