Volt ampere is used for rating of power supplies and equipments.

Volt ampere is the product of the RMS values of (AC) voltage and (AC) current - and we get the apparent power.

In a DC circuit, voltage and current multiplied gives the real power consumed.

Apparent power is to be multiplied by  a power factor  (0.8 or so) to get real power consumed.
