Explain the making of Germany and Italy.

Making Of Germany:

  • Middle class Germans Tried to unify Germany
  • This was repressed by combined forces of monarchy and the military , supported by large landowners of Prussia ( Junkers)
  • From then on Prussia took on the initiative of national unification.
  • Germany's chief minister Otto Von Bismarck with the help of Prussian army and bureaucracy, started the process through wars.
  • 3 wars over seven years with Austria, Denmark and France ended in Prussian Victory.
  • In January 1871 , Prussian king Kaiser William 1 was proclaimed as the German Emperor.

Making of Italy:

  • Before unification , Italy was divided into seven states, of only Sardinia Piedmont was ruled by an Italian Princely House.
  • Failure of Revolutionary Uprisings meant that the leadership of process of unification had to be taken up by Sardinia Piedmont under it's ruler King Victor Emmanuel 2.
  • Italy's chief minister Cavour led the movement to unify Italy.
  • Cavour, through a tactful diplomatic Alliance with France, Defeated Austrian Forces.
  • In 1960 , Giuseppe Garibaldi and his team of armed volunteers joined the war.
  • They Marched into South Italy and succeeded in winning the support of peasants to drive out the Spanish rulers.
  • In 1861 , Victor Emmanuel 2 was proclaimed the king of unified Italy.
