(a + b)^3 = a^3 + b^3 + 3a^2b + 3ab^2

(a + b)^2 = a^2 + b^2 + 2ab

Now,

x^4 - x^3 - 2x^2 - 3x + 1

(1 +  \sqrt{2} )^4 - (1 +  \sqrt{2} )^3 - 2(1  +  \sqrt{2} )^2 - 3(1 +  \sqrt{2} ) + 1

12 \sqrt{2} + 17 - (5 \sqrt{2} + 7) - 2(2 \sqrt{2} + 3) - 3(1 +  \sqrt{2} ) + 1

12 \sqrt{2} + 17 - 5 \sqrt{2} - 7 - 2(2 \sqrt{2} + 3) - 3(1 +  \sqrt{2} ) + 1

12 \sqrt{2} + 17 - 5 \sqrt{2} - 7 - 4 \sqrt{2} -6 - 3(1 +  \sqrt{2} ) + 1

12 \sqrt{2} + 17 - 5 \sqrt{2} - 7 - 4 \sqrt{2} - 6 - 3 - 3 \sqrt{2} + 1

1 - 3 - 3 \sqrt{2} - 4 \sqrt{2} - 5 \sqrt{2} - 6 - 7 + 12 \sqrt{2} + 17
