Sum of all angles in a triangle = 180°
In the right angled triangle
90° + 78° + x = 180°
x = 12°
Now,
Angle1 + 12° = 180°
Angle1 = 168°

Exetrior angle = Sum of opposite interior angles
Angle1 = 90° + 78° = 168°
An example of this alternative method is in the 2nd image attached.
