Answer:

(1) They didn't want to come with us at first, but we managed to persuade them.

(2) Kate wasn't at home when I phoned? but I couldn't contact her at the office.

Explanation:

To use the correct modal we need to understand the message of the sentence that it is trying to convey.

As if some work was difficult but someone did it then it is obvious to use managed to in the sentence.

And if we tried but failed then we use couldn't  in the sentence.

and if we got successful,  use could.

These all are modal verbs that it expresses the possibility of something.

They didn't want to come with us at first, but we could persuade them.

Kate wasn't at home when I phoned but I could contact her at the office.

  • The verbs in a sentence are the action words that describe what the subject is doing. Verbs, which describe what is happening, are the primary component of a sentence or phrase together with nouns. In fact, even the simplest sentences—like Maria's song—have a verb because complete thoughts cannot be adequately expressed without one.
  • Actually, a verb can be used to begin a sentence on its own by implying the subject, which is usually you in examples like "Sing!" and "Drive!"Almost always, verbs follow a noun or pronoun. The term "subject" refers to certain nouns and pronouns.

Here, the sentences are given as,

  • They didn't want to come with us at first, but we ___ persuade them.

Here, the correct form of the verb will be,

They didn't want to come with us at first, but we could persuade them.

  • Kate wasn't at home when I phoned but I --- contact her at the office.

Here, the correct form of the verb will be,

Kate wasn't at home when I phoned but I could contact her at the office.

Hence, the sentences are,

They didn't want to come with us at first, but we could persuade them. Kate wasn't at home when I phoned but I could contact her at the office.
