Step-by-step explanation:

Explanation:

The

3

mile cab ride includes a basic charge as well as the cost for the distance covered.

For a

6

mile trip, the cost is

$

4.80

which means that :

The cost of

3

miles is

$

4.80

$

3.00

=

$

1.80

Therefore the cost for

1

mile is

$

1.80

÷

3

=

$

0.60

The basic fee for hiring the cab is

$

3.00

$

1.80

=

$

1.20

So the total cost,

c

for a trip of

d

miles will be:

c

=

0.6

d

+

1.2

Check:

If

d

=

3

c

=

0.6

(

3

)

+

1.2

=

3

If

d

=

6

c

=

0.6

(

6

)

+

1.2

=

4.8

Given :  Speedy Taxicab Company charges a base fee plus a cost per mile for a cab ride.

Number of miles driven and the total cost for each ride

Miles       Cost $

3               3.90

7               5.10

10             6.00

15             7.50

18             8.40

To Find :  base fee for a cab ride

$2.00

$2.50

$3.00

$3.50

Solution:

Assume   base fee for a cab ride = $  b

Fee per miles  =  m

distance = d  miles

Cost for d  miles =    md  + b

3m +  b = 3.90

7m  + b = 5.10

=> 4m  = 1.20

=>  m = 0.3

3(0.3) + b = 3.90

=> b = 3

Hence base fee for a cab ride = $  3

Correct option is  $3.00
