Read the following speech Stella Swan delivered for her debate team.
I'm afraid there is only one thing on which my opponent and I agree. We agree that balancing the budget is a top priority. However, every single part of my opponent's approach to doing this is unacceptable. Whereas he encourages government spending on unnecessary programs, I want to cut back on those same programs. We simply cannot afford to give handouts anymore. After all, these handouts have led to serious financial debt. So how can we expect to reduce this debt with increased spending? Let me put it to you this way: if you wanted to pay back a loan, would you borrow more money in order to do it? Or would you instead save your money to pay back that loan? Obviously, if we're going to balance the budget, sacrifices must be made.
The other issue on which my opponent and I disagree is tax cuts. My opponent wants to tax the wealthiest individuals in order to pay back those countries from which we've been borrowing money. In other words, he believes the top earners in our society, such as doctors and lawyers, must be punished for their achievements. I shouldn't have to tell you why this is unacceptable. Such a plan is in direct opposition to the principles upon which this country is founded. Here in America, we have never placed limits on what the individual can achieve. Imposing such limits now would be unpatriotic. My opponent is essentially casting himself as a modern-day Robin Hood. He seems to think that stealing from the rich is okay. But I, for one, am not fooled. I believe that those who have earned their money deserve to have it. This is what American freedom is all about.
