It an application of "PYTHAGORAS THEOREM".

  \red{ \boxed{{ a}^{2}  =  {b}^{2}  +  {c}^{2}} }

Where

  •  \sf ''a'' \:is\: hypotenuse
  •  \sf''b'' \: and \: ''c'' \: are \: other \: two \: sides.

  \implies  {12}^{2}  =  {8}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}

 \implies 144 = 64 +  {y}^{2}

 \implies  {y}^{2}  = 144 - 64

 \implies  {y}^{2}  = 80

 \implies y =  \sqrt{80}

 \orange{ \therefore y = 4 \sqrt{5} }
