Mahatma Gandhi gave recognition to dalits by giving them a different name called 'HARIJAN' which means the name of the god.He gave this name because he believed that every person has god in himself but dalits were not treated the way he wanted.And only because of Mahatma Gandhi, dalits were being treated a littlebit good.

He took the following steps to improve their status:

(i) He eliminated untouchabilty by calling them "The Children of God, Harijan"

(ii) He said that their aims would not be fulfilled untouchability wasn't ended.

(iii) He allowed their entrance into temples and use public wells, roads, schools and other facilities through Satyagraha.

(iv) He worked with the Dalits to show that their job was a dignified one.

(v) He conducted campaigns to change the views of the people of the upper class related to the Dalits.
