Question:-

Calculate the values of x and y in the given diagram.

Solution:-

There are two right-angled triangles in this diagram,

1st traingle = ABC

2nd triangle = CPQ

For triangle ABC

Given:-

AB = 36 units

BC = 48 units

As the triangle is right-angled, we can find the hypotenuse by applying pythagoras theorem,

According to pythagoras theorem,

(Hypotenuse)² = (Base)² + (Perpendicular)²

=> (AC)² = (AB)² + (BC)²

= \sf{AC = \sqrt{(48)^2 + (36)^2}}

= \sf{AC = \sqrt{2304 + 1296}}

= \sf{AC = \sqrt{3600}}

= \sf{AC = 60\:units}

Now,

As it is given in the diagram,

AQ and QC are of same length

Hence,

AQ = \sf{\dfrac{1}{2}} AC

x = \sf{\dfrac{1}{2}\times60}

x = 30 units

Now,

In triangle CPQ,

CP = 18 units

PQ = y units

QC = AQ = 30 units.

Now as ∆CPQ is right-angled

We will apply the pythagoras theorem here too.

According to pythagoras theorem,

(QC)² = (PQ)² + (CP)²

=> (PQ)² = (QC)² - (CP)²

= \sf{x = \sqrt{(30)^2 - (18)^2}}

= \sf{x = \sqrt{900 - 324}}

= \sf{x = \sqrt{576}}

= x = 24 units.

Hence, the value of:-

x = 24 units

y = 30 units

Remember!!!

Pythagoras theorem:-

(Hypotenuse)² = (Base)² + (Perpendicular)²

(Perpendicular)² = (Hypotenuse)² - (Base)²

(Base)² = (Hypotenuse)² - (Perpendicular)²

This formula can only be applied when a triangle is right-angled.
