To know the difference between 2N and N₂, you should know what atoms and a molecule are.

Atom: The smallest single impartial particle that is used to define an element.

Molecule: A molecule is when two or more atoms form a bond together that enables it to participate in the chemical reaction.

Now we know the basic difference between an atom and a molecule, we can distinguish 2N from N₂.

  • Here 2N means two different molecules of Nitrogen atom whereas N₂ means two atoms of Nitrogen in a single molecule. They can also be referred to as diatomic molecules.
  • 2N just displays the number of Nitrogen atoms that are yet to bonder but N₂ formulates nitrogen gas by forming a covalent bond.
  • N₂ is a stable molecule but 2N just came into existence making it unstable

The purpose to form a molecule is stability and except for noble atoms, atoms may be reactive.
