Abstract

The inert gases have recently been recognized by physicists as useful substances with which to investigate the relationship between microscopic and macroscopic theories of matter, because their properties may be represented by simple theoretical models. However, there are many other areas in physics, particularly near the boundaries, where they now play an equally valuable role. In astrophysics, for example, analysis of the inert gas content of minerals and meteorites helps to date the origins of the universe. Electron microscope and diffusion studies of the inert gases in metals may solve a vitally important problem encountered in nuclear reactors. The discovery of stable inert gas compounds is a challenge to molecular bonding theory. Inert gas lasers provide physicists with a powerful probe with which to investigate the properties of liquids. These, together with many other applications, establish the inert gases as invaluable tools for research.
