Reproduction is a biological process by which organisms give rise to offspring similar to themselves.

  • It enables the continuity of species, with some individual variations.
  • There are two types of reproduction, sexual and asexual.

Asexual Reproduction

  • Asexual reproduction is when offspring are produced by one parent only, and there is no gamete formation.
  • The resultant offspring are genetically exactly similar to the parent- hence called clones.
  • Among the several types of asexual reproduction are cell division (yeast) and binary fission (amoeba).
  • In plants, asexual reproduction is more commonly known as vegetative reproduction. For example, bryophyllum gives rise to offspring from its leaves' edges.
  • Fragmentation is also a type of asexual reproduction and is seen in hydra.

Sexual Reproduction

  • Sexual reproduction is when offspring are produced by two parents of the opposite sex, or by one parent who produces both the male and female gamete.
  • All organisms have to reach the stage of sexual maturity before they can reproduce sexually. This period of growth is known as the juvenile phase. In plants, this period is called the vegetative phase.
  • Sexual reproduction may be divided into pre-fertilisation, fertilisation and post-fertilisation events.
  • The process of development of an embryo from a zygote is called embryogenesis. It is a post-fertilisation event.
