A and B can finish a piece of work in 16 days and 12 days respectively. A started the work and worked at it for 2 days. He was then joined by B. Find the total time taken to finish the work.

A takes 16 days
.. after working for 2 days
.. amount of work done = 2/16=1/8
so 7/8 work is still to be done
... now B also joins who takes 12 days to finish all work
.. now speed is 1/16 + 1/12=7/48.
is the speed in which both will work
.. that means both can do work in 48/5 days for 1 work
for 7/8 work
no of days taken = 48/7 *7/8 = 6
.
hence remaining work will be finished in 6+2 =8 days.
