In simple words CATALYST are those substance who does not take part in the reaction but it speed up the reaction in his presence.

Catalysts are compounds or elements that are used to change the speed of reactions.
Catalysts can be used to make the reaction faster that means if we are carrying out an reaction and want the reactants to yeild products faster, then catalysts are used.
Like Ni catalyst is used in hydrogenation reaction of carbon compounds.
Catalysts can also be used to make the reaction slower. That means if we are carrying out a reaction and want the reactants to yeild products slowly, then also catalysts are used.
These catalysts don't affect the reaction but only either make the reaction occur faster or slower.
