Question:

if if X and Y are 2×2 matrices,then solve the following Matrices equation for X and Y ,

2X + 3Y = X=\left[\begin{array}{cc}2&3\\4&0\end{array}\right]

3X+2Y = X=\left[\begin{array}{cc}-2&2\\1&-5\end{array}\right]

Theory :

A rectangular arrangement of numbers in row and column is called a matrix.

Properties of Matrices:

1) Addition of Matrices

If A,B and C are matrices of same order then ,

  • A+B = B+A
  • (A+B)+C = A+(B+C)
  • A+O = A ,where O is zero matrix

2)Scalar multiplication of Matrix

Let A= (a_{ij})_{m\timesn} and k be a number

kA = Ak = (ka_{ij})_{m\timesn}

Solution :

X=\left[\begin{array}{cc}-2&0\\-1&-3\end{array}\right]

Y=\left[\begin{array}{cc}2&1\\2&2\end{array}\right]
