Swami Vivekananda spoke about the importance of abolishing fanaticism in all forms, a relevant issue in the world, especially our country which is not only one of the oldest, but is also one of the youngest in terms of the population. Vivekananda had received a standing ovation for two minutes after his speech which went on to establish him as the greatest figure in the Parliament of World Religions and India as the mother of religions.

Today happens to be the day Swami Vivekananda delivered his remarkably famous Chicago Speech that is still remembered, even after 125 years, in India and around the world. Excerpts from his famous speech, for which he had received a standing ovation for 2 minutes at the Chicago Convention of Parliament of Religions, have been given below and how it still holds relevance in today's world.
India today has the firsts of many. Not only is the country one of the oldest, it is also one of the youngest in terms of the population. With nearly 40 percent of the population less than 30, the country stands at a crucial stage of world future. And yet, it is suffering from the many evils of a widening divide, widespread illiteracy and more importantly, a growing echo of intolerance. When Swami Vivekananda stood in the Parliament of Religions, 125 years ago, he talked about intolerance and religion and the importance of ending fanaticism in all forms.

Addressing the convention, Swami Vivekananda spoke, “Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long possessed this beautiful earth. They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often and often with human blood, destroyed civilization, and sent whole nations to despair. Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced than it is now. But their time is come; and I fervently hope that the bell that tolled this morning in honor of this convention may be the death-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen, and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal.”
Interestingly, the debate on intolerance has long raged within the world and in India. Perhaps more so in the recent years. However, the fact remains that India continues to be the country that has harbored refugees. Barring the odd incidents, it is still a country that houses all the world religions and celebrates individuality in its totality. Swami Vivekananda celebrated the same 125 years ago. And today, as the country rejoices in the the pride from association with the great mind, it becomes all the more important to further the message of peace and acceptance.
