⟹Availibility of resources, nature of landforms, climatic conditions, soils and presence of facilities are some of the reasons why people prefer to live in certain regions and not in others. Some fo the examples are:

⟹Freshly water is essential for survival. Thus, people prefer to live in areas where fresh water is available. This is the reason that river valleys are densely populated.

People generally prefer to live on flat plains and gentle slopes. This is because plains are favourable for growing crops, setting up industries and for developing the transport system.

⟹Regions with extreme climate and too high or low rainfall are scarcely populated. Mediterranean regions have been inhabited since the earliest period because of favourable climatic conditions.

Regions where soils are fertile are thickly populated. It is because fertile soil is essential for flourishing agricultural activities. This is the reason that the Northern Gangetic Plains are thickly populated and the dry regions of Rajasthan and Gujarat with sandy soil is thinly populated.
