i \: think \: you \: need \\ to \: find \:  {x}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}  \\ given \: that \\ x + y = 12 \: and \: xy = 14 \\  {(x + y)}^{2}  =  {x}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}  + 2xy \\  now \: putting \: the \: values \:  \\  {12}^{2}  =  {x}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}  + 2 \times 14 \\ 144 =  {x}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}  + 28 \\  {x}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}  = 144 - 28 \\  {x}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}  = 116 \\ hence \: the \: value \: of \:  {x}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}  \\ is \: 116
