Number of electrons in Mg - 12
As we go down a group , the number of shells increases and the effective nuclear charge on the electrons decreases making the element easy to loose electrons. So the mettalic charter increases down a group.
From left to right in a period , the effective nuclear charge on electrons increases making the element smaller in size while going towards the right end of a period. Due to this , it becomes hard for the elements to loose electrons, but can gain electrons. Hence the metallic charter increases.
Hope it helps.
