Let after time 't' the cyclist overtakes the bus.

The distance travelled by the bus in time 't',

S = ut + 1/2 at² = 0 + 1/2 × 2t² = t² ...(i)

The distance travelled by the cyclist in time 't',

s = vt =20t ...(2)

As the cyclist was 96 m

behind the bus, therefores,

S = s −96

⇒t²=20t−96

⇒t²−20t+96=0

⇒t²−12t−8t+96=0

⇒(t−12) (t−8)=0

Therefore, t = 8 s or t = 12 s.

The bus and the cyclist meets at two instances of time.

At t = 8 s, the cyclist overtakes the bus while at t = 12 s, the bus overtakes the cyclist.
