process by which new rock is made from old rock
Answers
Answer:
Just like a lot of things, rocks also change with time. This transition is not visible over night but takes years or hundreds of years at a time to manifest with the exception of catastrophic events like natural disasters like volcanic eruptions. The rocks have the potential to change between three forms- metamorphic rocks, igneous rock or sedimentary rock. The process through which rocks undergo change is called a rock cycle.
The rock cycle consists of six steps to change from one form to another. These are –
1. Transportation through elements like wind or water.
2. Deposition or settling down of the particles
3. Compaction or Cementation where layers come together and are stacked
4. Metamorphism- changing or transforming into metamorphic rock due to high heat or pressure
5. Rock melting- exposed lava turning to igneous rock by cooling down
6. Weathering- when rocks are constantly eroded or broken down by the elements of wind, water etc.
