Describe the irrigation system of cholas.
Answers
Every region around this world has its own history and its own list of kings. They remained as identities for rational culture in historic times. Those kings were very rarely remembered whenever citizens happened to see some monuments which were left by them. But it is not the same in case of Chola. Because what they were left to us are not just embracing monuments, but they are infrastructure and base of master plan of this state. When it is not abnormal to see cracks in modern architectures which are old but not more than 50, really those existing buildings which were built before 1000 years by Chola dynasty are wonders without doubt. Master plans for cities which we are living today, longest irrigation infrastructures including dams, canals, reservoir and lakes, temples and social centers which were raised by Chola kings gives basic shape to enhanced human civilization. Taxation methods, naval routes, international trading policies, bureaucracy, and administration principles which were proposed and followed in Chola period are still in practice today. I don’t think that I can describe the elegance which this state has attained during the golden period of Chola rule can be described within few web pages. For that we cannot left out Chola kings unapprised as we are not politicians. We do have heart and senses.
Certainly India is the country which is having oldest as well as largest irrigation system in this world. About 70% of irrigation structures of TamilNadu were constructed during age of Chola. I could say few examples, Grand Anaicut(Kalanai), Veeranarayanapuram Yeri(Veeranam Yeri where whole Chennai is depending upon for its fresh water). And the concept of rain water harvesting was first introduced by them. For which they employed a certain group of people and they were known as ‘Kaarkathaar’ (‘Kaar’- Rain, ‘Kathaar’- Protectors). Beyond this they have harvested rain water in following ways such as ponds and lakes. And the concept of ‘Flood Water Management’ (Which is still a big problem in several countries) was handled with intense knowledge. And their policy of supporting farmers can never be achieved with elegance which existed on those days.
