As we know that altitude to the side of equilateral triangle bisect it.

Therefore BD=a/2

Now, using Pythagoras theorem

AD Sq. +BD Sq. =AB Sq.

AD sq=a Sq. - a Sq. /4

ad {}^{2}  = (4a {}^{2}  - a {}^{2} ) \div 4 \\  \\ ad {}^{2}  = 3a {}^{2} \div 4 \\  \\ ad =  \sqrt{3}a   \div 2

Ans =root3 /2
