let the total number of balls be x

⇒ the number of red balls are (3/5)x

⇒ the green and yellow balls together are x - (3/5)x = (2/5)x

given that ratio of green balls to yellow balls is 5 : 3

let the total number of green balls be 5y and the total number of yellow balls be 3y

⇒ 5y + 3y = (2/5)x

⇒ 8y = (2/5)x

given that there are 10 less yellow balls than green balls

⇒ 5y - 3y = 10

⇒ 2y = 10

⇒ y = 5

⇒ the number of green balls in the box are 5 × 5 = 25 and the number of yellow balls are 5 × 3 = 15

⇒ total number of green balls and yellow balls together = 40

but we know that total number of green balls and yellow balls together is (2/5)x

⇒ (2/5 )x = 40

⇒ x = 100

⇒ total number of balls = 100 and total number of green balls and yellow balls together is 40

⇒ number of red balls = total balls - 40

⇒ number of red balls = 100 - 40 = 60
