  • Least common multiple of 12 and 18 is 36. Convert  \tt \: \frac{5}{12} and \frac{1}{18}  \\ to fractions with denominator 36.

 \tt \: \frac{17}{36}-\frac{2}{9}  \\

  • Least common multiple of 36 and 9 is 36. Convert  \tt \: \frac{17}{36} and \frac{2}{9}  \\ to fractions with denominator 36.

 \tt \: \frac{17}{36}-\frac{8}{36}  \\

  • Since  \tt \: \frac{17}{36} and \frac{8}{36} \\ have the same denominator, subtract them by subtracting their numerators.

 \tt \:  = \frac{17-8}{36}  \\  \\  \tt \: =  \frac{9}{36} \\  \\  \tt \: = \frac{1}{4}
