Explanation:
➪ Helping verbs that help convey possibility, certainty, ability, permission etc. are called modals. These words require a main verb and can't be used alone. Examples of modals and their use:-
- May (used to convey possibility and consent)
- Should (used to convey obligation and suggestion)
- Must (used to convey obligation)
- Could (used to convey ability)
➪ Quantifiers are words that indicate the quantity of an object. Some common quantifiers are: some, a lot of, a few, any, etc.
➪ Tenses are used to convey the time of an action. These are classified into three : past, present and future. There are different types of tenses in these categories that are used for different purposes. For example,
- The simple present tense is commonly used to convey habitual actions.
- The simple past tense is used to convey actions that took place in the past.
- The simple future tense is used to convey actions that will happen in the future.
- The past perfect tense is used to convey finished actions or events.
➪ Active voice and passive voice are the two ways of conveying a sentence in English. In active voice, the subject is performing the action. In passive voice, the subject is receiving the action.
To convert a sentence from active voice to passive voice, the first step is to identify the subject, the object and the tense of the sentence. Then the subject and the object are swapped, and 'by' is added before the subject. A helping verb according to the tense of the sentence is added. The verb is changed to its participle and the sentence is in passive voice! :D
➪ Conditionals are clauses with the word 'if'. There are four types of conditionals:
- Conditional type zero: conveys events certain to happen.
- Conditional type one: conveys possible actions.
- Conditional type two: conveys imaginary actions.
- Conditional type three: conveys impossible actions.
