Hi ,

Let us assume present ages ,

Father age = x years

Son age = y years

After 6 years
___________

Father age = ( x + 6 ) years

Son age = ( y + 6 ) years

According to the problem given ,

x + 6 = 3( y + 6 )

x + 6 = 3y + 18

x = 3y + 12 ----( 1 )

3 years ago :
__________

Father age = ( x - 3 ) years

Son age = ( y - 3 ) years

x - 3 = 9( y - 3 )

x - 3 = 9y - 27

x = 9y - 24 ---( 2 )

( 1 ) = ( 2 )

3y + 12 = 9y - 24

12 + 24 = 9y - 3y

36 = 6y

36/6 = y

6 = y

y = 6 ----( 3 )

Put y = 6 in equation ( 1 ) , we get

x = 3y + 12

= 3 × 6 + 12

= 18 + 12

x = 30

Therefore ,

At present :

Father age = x = 30 years

Son age = y = 6 years

I hope this helps you.
