Given equation is b= 2a-3 for (a,b)Then check for (X,-1)-1=2x-3
=>2x = 2
=>X=1
Now check for (5,y)
Y = 2(5)-3
=>Y=10-3
=>Y=7
So. X=1 and. Y=7

Question

If the ordered pair (x, -1) and (5, y) belong to the set {(a, b) : b = 2a - 3}. Find the values of x and y.

Solution

Given that ordered pair (x, -1) and (5, y) belong to the set {(a, b) : b = 2a - 3}

Hence, for every value of a, b = 2a - 3

Since (x, -1) belongs to the given set, x is the first element, that is a and -1 is the second element, that is b.

Hence, put a as x and b as -1 in the equation b = 2a - 3

⇒ - 1 = 2x - 3

⇒ 2x = 2

⇒ x = 1

Again, (5, y) belongs to the same set. Hence,

y = 2(5) - 3

⇒ y = 10 - 3

⇒ y = 7

Hence, the values of x and y are 1 and 7 respectively.
