let the speed of steam be x km/hr
the the speed in upsteam= (12-x)km/hr. and speed in downstream =(12+x)km/hr
now
time taken by boat in upsteam and downstream is 16÷12-x and 16÷12+x hr respectfully
from given condition
16÷12-x=16÷12+x +1
16÷12-x. -16÷12+x. =1
16(12+x-12+x)÷144+12x-12x-x^=1
32x=144-x^
x^+32x-144=O
(x+36)(x-4)=0
x=-36 or x=4
speed can't be negative
x=4
