so, x+y=120 gm..................(i)

y= 120-x...............ii

And

18x+12y= 16 carat of 120 gm

18x+12y=16×120

6(3x+2y)=6×(16×20)

3x+2y=320...............(iii)

on putting value of y in eq iii

3x+2(120-x)=320

3x+240-2x=320

x=80 gm

Now putting value of x in eq ii

y=120-x

y=120-80

y=40gm

x=80 gm}. Answers
